Acupuncture in Fertility Enhancement:

Acupuncture, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), In the context of fertility enhancement, acupuncture offers several potential mechanisms of action.

Regulation of Reproductive Hormones:

Acupuncture has been shown to modulate the release of reproductive hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol. These hormonal changes can promote ovulation and improve menstrual regularity in women, as well as enhance sperm quality in men (Stener-Victorin et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2016).

Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Spleen 6 (SP6): Located 3 finger-widths above the medial malleolus, SP6 is commonly used to regulate menstruation and promote blood circulation in the pelvic area.
  • Governing Vessel 4 (GV4): Situated on the midline of the lower abdomen, GV4 is believed to tonify the kidneys and regulate reproductive function.

Improved Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs:

Acupuncture stimulates specific points to enhance blood circulation to the ovaries, uterus, and testes. Improved blood flow facilitates the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to these tissues, optimizing their function and supporting fertility (Dieterle et al., 2006; Manheimer et al., 2011).

Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Ren Mai 4 (RM4): Located on the midline of the lower abdomen, RM4 is associated with promoting blood flow to the reproductive organs and tonifying the kidneys.

  • Kidney 3 (KD3): Positioned on the medial side of the foot, in the depression between the medial malleolus and Achilles tendon, KD3 is thought to strengthen the kidneys and improve reproductive health

Reduction of Stress Levels: Acupuncture has been found to reduce stress by influencing the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins. Stress reduction is crucial for fertility, as elevated stress hormones can interfere with reproductive function (Qu, 2016; Balk et al., 2010).

Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Pericardium 6 (PC6): Located on the inner forearm, 2 finger-widths above the wrist crease, PC6 is renowned for its calming effects and is often used to alleviate stress and anxiety.

  • Yintang (Extra Point): Positioned between the eyebrows, Yintang is considered an important point for calming the mind and promoting relaxation.

Enhanced Egg Quality and Uterine Health: Studies suggest that acupuncture may improve egg quality by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation within the ovaries. By creating a favorable microenvironment, acupuncture can enhance the success of assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) (Zheng et al., 2012; Jo et al., 2017).

Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Ren Mai 12 (RM12): Located on the midline of the abdomen, RM12 is associated with tonifying the spleen and regulating menstruation.

  • Stomach 30 (ST30): Positioned below the navel, 2 finger-widths lateral to the midline, ST30 is believed to promote blood circulation in the pelvic region and support reproductive health.
