Tension headaches

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. They are often linked to stress, anxiety, and muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. Other common triggers include poor posture, inadequate sleep, dehydration, and prolonged screen use.

Ways to Help Reduce or Prevent Tension Headaches

Manage stress and relax the body
Practising relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or gentle stretching can help calm the nervous system and reduce muscle tension that contributes to headaches.

Improve posture
Maintaining good posture—especially during desk work or long periods of sitting—can reduce strain on the neck and shoulders, helping to prevent tension-related headaches.

Get adequate sleep
Quality sleep is essential for overall health and headache prevention. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep per night whenever possible.

Stay well hydrated
Dehydration is a common headache trigger. Drinking enough water throughout the day can help reduce headache frequency and intensity.

Take regular screen breaks
Extended screen time can strain the eyes and tighten neck and shoulder muscles. Taking short breaks to rest your eyes and stretch can be very helpful.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine May Help

Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the gentle stimulation of specific points on the body to support the body’s natural healing processes. It may help relieve tension, reduce stress, and improve circulation, all of which can contribute to reducing tension headaches.

Prefer a Needle-Free Option?

If you are uncomfortable with needles, we also offer laser Acupuncture, a gentle, needle-free and pain-free alternative designed to stimulate acupuncture points without skin penetration.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine focuses on treating the underlying imbalances contributing to headaches. Herbal formulas are customised to each individual and may be used alone or alongside acupuncture for a holistic approach.

Common herbs used for tension headaches may include:

  • Chrysanthemum flower – traditionally used to relieve headaches and eye strain

  • Angelica root (Dong Quai) – supports circulation and helps ease muscle tension

  • White peony root – known for its muscle-relaxing and calming properties

  • Gastrodia root – traditionally used to calm the nervous system

  • Ginger – valued for its anti-inflammatory effects

Chinese medicine therapies aim to treat both the symptoms and the root cause of tension headaches, supporting long-term relief and overall wellbeing.

If you experience frequent, worsening, or severe headaches, it is important to consult your GP to rule out underlying medical conditions.
