28 Days Postnatal Confinement Herbal Care 坐月

Why is Postnatal Care so Important ?

Postnatal confinement, also known as "zuò yuè zi" or "sitting the month," is a traditional practice in Chinese culture that involves a period of recovery and confinement for new mothers after giving birth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), postnatal confinement is considered to be a crucial time for the mother's physical and emotional health, and it is believed to play a vital role in preventing postpartum health issues and promoting long-term wellness.

There are several reasons why postnatal confinement is important in TCM:

  1. Promotes Physical Recovery: Giving birth is a significant physical and emotional event, and the body requires time to recover. Postnatal confinement provides an opportunity for the mother's body to rest, recover and heal. During this time, the mother is encouraged to rest and avoid physical activities that can strain the body, such as heavy lifting, exercise, and sex.
  2. Helps Restore energy- Qi: In TCM, the postpartum period is considered a time of significant change and transition. The body's Qi or energy is believed to be weak and vulnerable during this time, and postnatal confinement is seen as a way to promote Qi circulation and restore energy in the body.
  3. Improves Breastfeeding: During postnatal confinement, new mothers are encouraged to breastfeed and eat a nutritious diet to promote milk production. They are also advised to avoid certain foods that can reduce milk supply or cause digestive problems in the mother and baby.
  4. Promotes Emotional Health: Giving birth can be an emotional experience, and postnatal confinement is seen as a time for the mother to connect with her baby and adjust to the new role of motherhood. Family members and friends are encouraged to provide support and help with household chores during this time, allowing the mother to focus on her recovery and bonding with her baby.

In summary, postnatal confinement is an essential part of TCM and is considered crucial for the mother's physical and emotional health. It provides a period of rest and recovery, promotes Qi circulation and balance, and helps to establish a healthy breastfeeding routine.
