Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine: A Comprehensive Approach to Enhancing Fertility

Fertility is a complex and multifaceted aspect of human health that encompasses various physiological, hormonal, and psychological factors. For individuals struggling with infertility, conventional treatments such as assisted reproductive techniques (ART) offer solutions, but complementary therapies like acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have gained attention for their potential to improve fertility outcomes. In this comprehensive exploration, we delve into the mechanisms of action, evidence-based benefits, and specific acupuncture points and herbal medicines that contribute to enhancing fertility in both women and men.

Acupuncture in Fertility Enhancement: Acupuncture, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), In the context of fertility enhancement, acupuncture offers several potential mechanisms of action:

Regulation of Reproductive Hormones: Acupuncture has been shown to modulate the release of reproductive hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol. These hormonal changes can promote ovulation and improve menstrual regularity in women, as well as enhance sperm quality in men (Stener-Victorin et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2016).
Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Spleen 6 (SP6): Located 3 finger-widths above the medial malleolus, SP6 is commonly used to regulate menstruation and promote blood circulation in the pelvic area.
  • Governing Vessel 4 (GV4): Situated on the midline of the lower abdomen, GV4 is believed to tonify the kidneys and regulate reproductive function.

Improved Blood Flow to Reproductive Organs:Acupuncture stimulates specific points to enhance blood circulation to the ovaries, uterus, and testes. Improved blood flow facilitates the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to these tissues, optimizing their function and supporting fertility (Dieterle et al., 2006; Manheimer et al., 2011).
Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Ren Mai 4 (RM4): Located on the midline of the lower abdomen, RM4 is associated with promoting blood flow to the reproductive organs and tonifying the kidneys.
  • Kidney 3 (KD3): Positioned on the medial side of the foot, in the depression between the medial malleolus and Achilles tendon, KD3 is thought to strengthen the kidneys and improve reproductive health

Reduction of Stress Levels: Acupuncture has been found to reduce stress by influencing the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins. Stress reduction is crucial for fertility, as elevated stress hormones can interfere with reproductive function (Qu, 2016; Balk et al., 2010).
Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Pericardium 6 (PC6): Located on the inner forearm, 2 finger-widths above the wrist crease, PC6 is renowned for its calming effects and is often used to alleviate stress and anxiety.
  • Yintang (Extra Point): Positioned between the eyebrows, Yintang is considered an important point for calming the mind and promoting relaxation.

Enhanced Egg Quality and Uterine Health: Studies suggest that acupuncture may improve egg quality by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation within the ovaries. By creating a favorable microenvironment, acupuncture can enhance the success of assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) (Zheng et al., 2012; Jo et al., 2017).
Relevant Acupuncture Points:

  • Ren Mai 12 (RM12): Located on the midline of the abdomen, RM12 is associated with tonifying the spleen and regulating menstruation.
  • Stomach 30 (ST30): Positioned below the navel, 2 finger-widths lateral to the midline, ST30 is believed to promote blood circulation in the pelvic region and support reproductive health.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Fertility Enhancement: Chinese herbal medicine complements acupuncture by providing systemic support for reproductive health. Herbal formulas are tailored to address specific imbalances and promote overall wellness. Here are some common herbs used to benefits fertility:

  1. Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis): Dong Quai is commonly used in TCM to regulate menstrual cycles and promote blood circulation. It is especially beneficial for women with irregular periods or menstrual cramps, as it helps to nourish the blood and balance hormonal levels.
  2. Ginseng (Panax ginseng): Ginseng is a well-known adaptogenic herb that supports overall vitality and reproductive health. It is believed to enhance stamina, improve sperm quality, and promote libido in men, making it a valuable addition to fertility formulas.
  3. Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum): Goji berries are rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients that support reproductive function. They are traditionally used to tonify the kidneys, nourish the blood, and improve fertility outcomes in both men and women.
  4. Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa): Rehmannia is a key herb in TCM for nourishing yin and replenishing the blood. It is frequently prescribed for women with deficiencies in kidney yin or blood, which can manifest as symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and irregular menstruation.
  5. Peony (Paeonia lactiflora): Peony root is renowned for its ability to soothe the liver and regulate qi and blood circulation. It is often used in combination with other herbs to alleviate menstrual pain, reduce inflammation, and support overall reproductive health.
  6. Tribulus (Tribulus terrestris): Tribulus is a popular herb in Ayurvedic and TCM traditions for its aphrodisiac properties and potential benefits for male fertility. It is believed to increase testosterone levels, improve sperm count and motility, and enhance reproductive function.
  7. Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium): Horny Goat Weed is prized for its libido-enhancing effects and potential benefits for male sexual health. It is traditionally used to tonify the kidneys, strengthen yang energy, and improve erectile function.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine offer a holistic approach to fertility enhancement, addressing the underlying imbalances and supporting reproductive health in both women and men. By stimulating specific acupuncture points and incorporating key herbs into individualized formulas, TCM practitioners can provide valuable support for couples on their journey towards conception.

Acupuncture and IVF fertility

Acupuncture is believed to:

  • reduce stress, increasing quality of life while you’re undertaking treatment, and
  • stimulate blood flow to the uterus, influencing the menstrual cycle and ovulation.

A study have shown that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer may improve implantation rates.

Modern Science

Modern medical science suggests the causes of female infertility can be grouped into four major categories. These relate to

  • egg production,
  • physical blockages,
  • embryo implantation
  • other factors which may lead to unexplained infertility.

Acupuncture is not contraindicated to IVF therapy because unlike drug based therapies, acupuncture has no co-interaction issues. Since the induction of IVF therapy, acupuncture treatment protocols have been continually refined. As a result, acupuncture has developed into an excellent adjunct therapy to IVF.

When fertility is unexplained there are numerous factors which may be the cause. Generally speaking, these are lifestyle issues and include: psychological and emotional factors; age; body weight; smoking; alcohol; caffeine intake; immunological abnormalities, borderline hormonal imbalances. Book now and see how acupuncture can benefit you on your IVF fertility journey.
